I have come to hate the term social justice and I now try to avoid it. This is not because I am against social justice at face value (How cold-hearted do you have to be against justice in society?). I just get frustrated because the phrase is so loosely thrown around (it is especially frustrating when that is done in an exploitive way to advance social or political ideologies or policies). In fact a lot of what people do in the name of justice is really mercy. Mercy is great too, but it isn't the same thing as justice! And yet, we as Christians, can't use that frustration and misrepresentation to excuse ourselves from the biblical responsibilities we bear for justice...
Anyway, I was pleased to have someone recently direct me to a series of posts by Kevin DeYoung dealing with this important yet convoluted topic in a biblical and intelligent way. I would encourage you to check out Kevin's posts with an open mind as you consider the biblical case for "social justice":
